Hailing from Missoula, Montana, Josh started drumming at the age of 9. Over the next decade, under the mentorship of The Bop-A-Dips iconic drummer extraordinaire Checkers Barker, and tutelage of local legendary music educators John Schuberg and John Combs, Josh’s endeavors in drumming included everything imaginable from traditional band, to All-City Jazz Band, to the Starlighter’s Ball, to the Red Wave (and later) Hellgate Marching Bands, and naturally, several random late night jam sessions. Josh was also an active member of the Hellgate Pep Band, which was widely (and unofficially) considered at the time to be the "Best Pep Band in the Land". Several fine musicians he proudly considers friends had much influence on him during those years, including his older brother Jory, Josh Plum, Nate Schweber, Lido Vizzutti, the Bendickson brothers, the Garthwait brothers, and Andrew Holder to name a few.
Josh Looking Impressive
"I hate when this happens!"
After high school, Josh joined the band and cast of Summer Lovin’, the nightly in-house production at Many Glacier Hotel, in the heart of Glacier National Park. With the exception of an occasional Starlighter’s Ball appearance, Prescott All-Night party, or late night jam session, drumming for Summer Lovin’ would come to represent the last full-time gig for Josh as he began to shift his attention away from music and towards higher education and eventually a banking career.
Not Philip on Guitar!
Several years, one coast change, marriage and two children later, Josh found himself looking over at the drum set in the practice studio of bank colleague, softball teammate, friend, and eventual band mate Phil Angell when he mumbled something to the effect, “Well… I used to play the drums.” Months later, as fate would have it, Phil found himself in need of an occasional back-up drummer for his band, Idyll Minds, and reached out to Josh. Later, in Fall 2018, Josh would join the band full-time.
